Sumter County deputies respond to two incidents at two separate schools

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Sumter County deputies made several arrests Friday following two separate fights at different schools.

A student and a parent were arrested and charged with assault in connection with the incidents.

The first reported fight took place at RE Davis School, where deputies say a 17-year-old girl and her mother assaulted another student.

A Sumter County Sheriff’s Office school resource officer called deputies for help around 9 a.m. that morning.

Investigators say neither the mother nor her student had permission to be on campus.

Nessia Gibson, 36, was charged with 3rd degree battery.

Gibson was taken to the Sumter County Detention Center and is awaiting her bond hearing.

The 17-year-old will have to appear in family court.

“We have to start with love,” Verlyn Johnson’s uncle told RE Elementary. “Love each other, respect each other and handle situations calmly instead of blowing things out of proportion.

The second fight took place at Lakewood High School in Sumter. Investigators say a 17-year-old assaulted a deputy after attacking two students.

Sumter County investigators say they were called to the school around 9:22 a.m. after a 17-year-old attacked two other students.

During his arrest, authorities say the 17-year-old punched a deputy.

The deputy was treated at the hospital and has since been released.

The 17-year-old was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice and will also appear in family court.
